It’s like a Heatwave! Burnin’ in my heart, Heatwave! It’s tearing’ me apart*

Well it looks like we are finally rocking to a bit of a heatwave here in the good old U.K. The land of umbrella’s, cups of tea and stiff upper lips.

There was a song by Noel Coward telling us that only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.

Now being a Scotsman, I cannot attest to this fact although I do know that when I go out in the said sun I nearly always end up looking like a belisha beacon!

If you are unfamiliar with the summers here in the U.K (yeah right, you have to have been living under a rock not to know at least ONE joke about the British summer time!) then you must first understand that we seldom get a real cracking hot days (unfortunately, to be assured of sunshine enough to lay in, it is nearly always a requirement to travel abroad for ones holiday) on their own let alone any amount of sequential hot days that might constitute an entire spell of good weather.

Or so we may have thought…

This week so far has been so blistering hot, the dogs have been unable to walk very far, even us humans have been restricted! Normally I would have done my best to produce a quantitive reading of these details for today’s post comparing the figures to two months ago; but I am unable to because we must consider whether I may or may not have improved in fitness to such an extent that regardless of the heat we are feeling today I could or could not actually determine a difference twixt the two. I myself believe that it has affected me in a positive manner because I am so much fitter than I was when we started this fitness/measurement regime and I know for a fact that I am much healthier than ever because of my monitoring of fitness and medication.

I suppose what I am saying is, if it is so very very hot that you cannot hold your hand to the tarmac for about five seconds then please do not walk your dog. In the same vein, if it is this hot, think about not walking yourself because as much as I hate missing any training sessions, having to lay in bed because of sunstroke has got to be there in the list of most hated things us outdoors types hate as a priority. In all reality we should be happy to sit and sensibly enjoy the weather without kicking the backside out of it, at least before it all disappears which it is bound to after this article.

Remember folks, the Sun is a weapon of mass destruction but if it makes you feel better before it goes boom, my advice would be to roll with it, lay in it and let it warm your bones and oh, try to find a piece of music better than the above listing.

So the food diary was once again very good with the headline figures working out well, keeping the Protein higher than the Carbohydrate was tough due to the amount of gym work I undertook and that in itself makes my body crave the carbs, but regardless of this I was able to do it and for that alone I’m pleased.

There was no gym to report on so it is straight to the walking with the dog which itself was such a short walk due to the heat. Although we covered a little ground, I walked at Archie’s pace and thus was dead slow and stop covering not very much ground at all. This means there is not much point in screenshots of Polar H7’s or Map My Walks (don’t worry, I can see you smiling and punching the air because you don’t have to look at boring old statistics….!) so all we have for you today is the Jawbone Up24 reading which after a days pottering about wasn’t actually that bad at 7083 steps.


So we are back at it tomorrow but I’m not sure how much walking will get done in this heat so for the moment, we may be sticking a pin in that until the temperature starts to come down a touch. But then that is trying to out-guess the British summertime so lets see what the day brings…..

      Quite remarkable Lily. Even yesterday when it was cloudy, it was still T shirt weather as it was so humid. But the sun got his hat on at about 2.30 and warmed the place up even more as the day went on. Today we are expecting a good late 20’s early 30’s centigrade temperature……. 😉

    Enjoy the sun! I managed to pick the hottest day so far (42 degrees) to get lost in the Pyrenees turning a 2 hour hike with The Bean into a (drum roll …. wait for it!) 7 hour hike. We are still recovering and it’s still in the 40s here 😀

      Loving the sun here (although not 42˚C!!!)
      I cannot imagine getting lost for that amount of time in such ferocious heat.
      I hope you had water with you and the Bean was okay.
      That would have finished Archie for sure and he would have laid down and refused to move!
      Still drama averted so next time take a map!
