Tried To Make Me Go To Rehab

Morning everybody, as you know very recently I have been walking a great deal and attending the Gym, although not as much as I would like as it is having somewhat of an adverse effect on my body. I am trying not to take on too much and overdo it being very aware of the pitfalls of rushing back into exercise after such a long lay off. I am trying to be aware and to realise that this new lifestyle of mine is not an overnight solution and I am now no longer in a sprint but am taking part in my very own marathon of a healthy life. This life requires a balance yet balance isn’t in my nature. I tend to knock the bloody hell out of everything and then end up wondering why I have no energy, have injuries and end up with no enthusiasm for something I was so keen on when I first started out.

On Monday I walked and was absolutely finished by the time I was done although admittedly I had not taken it particularly slowly, stretching myself on a 5.5km route but I was still walking and not in too much pain. On Tuesday however I found that I was quite tired and slow and although I hit my target of 10,000 steps I struggled to manage the day without pain in both my lower back and between my lower scapula, not a great deal of fun I can tell you.

Anyway, I was lucky enough to go in and see a very knowledgable guy by the name of Adam Dobson from Revolution Sports Injuries Clinic who is based in the gym I go to, The TFD Gym in Grove Wantage. He sat with me for some time and discussed my aches and pains, plus he appeared to be genuinely interested in my blogging and surgery. I was quickly put at ease (I don’t like going to new places as you guys know) and was super impressed at his extensive knowledge, discussing the remedies for my rotator cuff issues in the shoulder and also advising that a massage was not really the solution for what was ailing me at the moment but some specific exercises were the way forward. Quite excellent work when you consider he would have made more money if I had had the massage.

After a full assessment of my shoulder movements and how I was standing (Lordotic posture if you want to know, I wasn’t surprised as I am very posh me). This type of posture basically means that I tend to lean back as opposed to standing straight which closes up the vertebrae of my lower back and makes movement very sore if not impossible.

Anyway, Adam worked out some new stretching exercises for me then very kindly emailed them (see below) so I would not forget! If you are in the local area and have sports related or even skeletal related issues, I can recommend him thoroughly, he has even partially rewritten my gym exercise program so that it does not interfere with any of my back issues.

Quite excellent.

So yesterday I had the day off of exercise completely, in fact I almost had a day off of life and kept myself tucked away at home living like a hermit. Before my operation I used to do this on a regular basis and I almost had no choice about it. I could happily withdraw for three or four days at a time going into my “shell”, although now it is almost weird to look back on it as occurring such a short period of time ago because although I indulged myself with a day of hermit living, I was able to get on with an absolute ton of issues that had become outstanding, catch up on some sleep, eat properly (which to be fair I do 99% of the time anyway) and watch a bit of TV – something I have not done for a few weeks. Okay most of this was driven by back pain but I declined the normal use of pain medication and knowing that my anti depressant use has halved in the days since my operation although I actually feel brighter is an absolute bonus.

Today I hope to be back out there, raring to go. Obviously I shall do my specific exercises in order to help my lower back, Scapula and rotator cuffs, but I shall also take the walk relatively easily and I shall attend the gym at a good slow sensible pace, watching all of my exercises are not rushed so I don’t hurt myself. You never know, I may even get a bright sunny day in which to perform these tasks.

Now, very quickly, I shall go back to the You Tube channel preparations to give you a quick update. All I need to do now is write a script as everything was set up yesterday, all of the light levels were worked out, distances set and backgrounds arranged. I may have to start with the background of one of my pictures by Tim Layzell but I will soon change to a WBFM derived background picture by Blueberry Display who were introduced to me on Facebook. We are just arranging it now so watch this space. The Worlds Biggest Fridge Magnet on You Tube will be here sooner than you might expect…
